• Since I can’t get started with WP until next weekend, I’ve been cruising the site, studying other blogs and trying to make design decisions.

One thing I’ve noticed that many sites are in this wider HD-type format. And https://www.dailykos.com actually offers you a CHOICE of viewing it wide or narrow!

I was planning to hold the line at 764 pixels wide–just enough to handle one of those giant banner ads without it looking as if had ramrodded in. What’s the “official” width the wider format? And am I the only person left on earth who has to do extra scrolling to see it?

  • That’s neat, what Daily Kos did. Here’s a good article about optimal set-width designs:

Wide is the future. Wide is now. Wide is wonderful.

I’ve been toying with this as well. In my case, I think that techie sites are probably safer at wider resolutions. I’m still not convinced that normal commercial sites (those aimed at non-techie consumers) would fare as well at higher fixed widths.

I wish someone would tell me otherwise. ??

It’s probably best to make a custom analysis of traffic to your web site, and see what resolution folks are coming in with. But it is my belief that we can safely assume that 800×600 is near gone, just like web-safe colors faded into history.

Design for 1024×768. Keep in mind “above the fold” and consider spacious margins.

Fingers crossed. I’m coming to that conclusion pretty quickly.

The Cameron Moll article makes so much sense that while I’m going to start off at 764 pixels, I’ll move up to 960 as my content increases. It will look decent on a 1024 screen while not forcing us decrepit 800 types to scroll excessively.

I’ll tell you what–having the time to deal with these kinds of issues before I even “set foot” on WordPress is turning out to be an enormous blessing in disguise! Thanks!
