Am I being made a fool of?

I feel like I am being taking for a fool by my (paid) wordpress designer. I am not very technical at all, so I respect that I am out of my depth and not accusing him of anything here. I would like to understand from the community if the following really is near-on impossible. Please say if I’m being silly here or if I’m being a little ripped-off.

I’ve commissioned a not-for-profit site that uses Instagram hashtags to capture pictures for the site. This part is fine, it uses a specific hashtag to capture all photos required – I’ve seen plugins for this already. The hard part is this;

I’ve asked for the site to also take additional data from captions of each captured photo. The data is like using name of the football team they sponsor – I’m using this as an example. So, if they enter #football (which will capture their photo = easy) I also want it to capture their football team e.g. #manchesterunited.The idea then is to put manchesterunited into a league table on the site once it has been mentioned. I’m told that capturing the photo is easy, capturing extra data from within the hashtags is pretty much impossible.

I appreciate it’s asking for a fair bit, but it’s pretty necessary for my site and it was agreed at the start that this is what would happen. Now it’s fairly near completion and I’m told that the key part isn’t possible.

Are there any workarounds?
