I figured a temporary solution with changing the ordering of popular posts from popularity to recent_numb in the alx-tabs.php. If anyone comes up with a better solution let me know. thanks!

One option would be to use a plugin like Shortcodes Ultimate that allows post selection by category.

Here’s another plugin that addresses just posts by category.
