• Currently hosting on a .com site and looking to switch over. (https://beartoons.com)

I looked over things and was all set to go with Bluehost (or its sister company) but in both cases the TOS said

“Profanity. Profanity or profane subject matter in the site content and in the domain name are prohibited.”

Now my site isn’t pornographic or profane but I do cuss at times and I would put my content at PG-13. So I fear going with them.

I saw alternatives that www.remarpro.com offered but can’t find a thread if anyone has actually discussed the different alternatives.

Sorry if posting something already been asked.

  • According to several posts, including the one listed below, BlueHost is more strict on its interpretation of profanity than many other hosts.

My best suggestion is to pick a host based on quality of service, uptime and all those things. Once you’ve ID’ed your #1 choice, talk to their abuse department about exactly what type of possibly profane material you have in mind, and see what they say.

I can’t find the thread either, but about 6 months ago, someone had contacted one of the better hosts and they only got upset with material that violated U.S. law on profanity.

Just looking at my own web host, which I really like, they are pretty clear on what they allow and don’t allow:

Thank you both. Adiant, I’ll have to check out arvixe.

Working my way through the recos from www.remarpro.com and now I see dreamhost has a D rating from the Better Business Bureau.

    On to the next one.

Yes, the non-profit where I created my first web page in 1995 has just dumped DreamHost because of repeated failures over the last 8 months. Apparently, they are moving their Data Centre. And don’t seem to know how to do move web sites from one server to another without “forgetting something”. Files disappear, etc.

Interesting…as I research I find alot of hosts promising unlimited bandwith yet reviewers say they don’t if you tend to use more than your “share”

If my site gets to a point where I am seeing consistent high traffic that warrants a dedicated server, I have no problem paying. But I would hate to go with someone who shuts down my site if I have 2-3 days in a row with unexpectedly high traffic.

Good point! I don’t want to share a web server with other customers that can generate “unlimited” bandwidth. So, I chose the ResellerClass at Arvixe. It is limited to 500GB per month for $240/year with all sorts of discounts available. I googled for coupons, then found that I could get a discount on the next year by running a small link to Arvixe on my home page. Plus a free domain name registration.

But the real attraction of Reseller type plans at most web hosts is that they give each domain name its own isolated FileSystem, which seriously reduces the chance of any domain name interfering with another. You can even create fake domain names, like site.test for testing site.com, for test web sites.

But, to address your original question, Arvixe policy is to shut down errant web sites immediately if they are interfering with existing customers on the same server. But, then they work with you to resolve the problem before putting you back on-line.

I’ve been with BlueHost for years and have absolutely loved it in every aspect. I am aware what their Terms of Service mention on profanity, but that hasn’t really been an issue in my blogging and other sites, however, I have several friends who also host with BlueHost, some of whom do use some more explicit language. I think that BlueHost only really tends to enforce such rules when the profanities are made against specific individuals and people complain about them.

With that said, you are the best judge of your content and should choose based off of that. In addition to BlueHost, another hosting company which I have seen quite highly recommended by WordPress users, though I have never used them myself, is A Small Orange.

Good luck with wherever you choose!
