    Hi there, great plugin!

If I have a variable product (for example a tshirt in 3 sizes) -> obviously I will add each variation into the feed as a product (each variation also has a unique URL and a Gtin) and they are linked via the item_group_id value.

However (I have been trying to find answers to this everywhere): Should/must I also add the “neutral” parent product into the feed (which does not have a GTIN)?

Thanks a lot, I really appreciate it
    Peter

  • Hi Peter,

Thanks for using our plugin and reaching out to us.

The parent product itself cannot be added using our plugin. We intentionally designed our plugin like that as most marketing channels, such as Google Shopping and Facebook require you to remove the parent products from feeds.

We have actually written a blog post about this:
    https://adtribes.io/can-i-add-mother-products-to-my-feed-and-leave-out-the-variations/

    Hope this helps?

    All the best,
    Eva

Hi Eva, thanks a lot for the quick answer! You claim that Facebook and Google Shopping require you to remove the parent products from feeds – I do believe you, but is there any kind of official documentation about this? As I have not found anything stating this from Google or Facebook. I just want to be extra sure.

    Thanks a lot
    Peter

    Hi Peter,

The reason you cannot just add the parent products to your feed is because the parent product doesn’t have a price and lots of other important attributes which are required for adding products into Google’s merchant center. Adding products to Google’s merchant center that don’t have a price will result in all of your items getting disapproved. See: https://support.google.com/merchants/answer/7052112?hl=en

What you can do, and which might be a bit confusing to you, is adding the default variant of the variable product you have set (typically the cheapest one). In that case you will only be adding one variant of a parent product into a feed. See our blog-post about this: https://adtribes.io/how-to-add-only-one-product-variation-to-your-product-feed/

    Hope this helps?

    All the best,
    Eva

Hi Eva, thanks a lot for your detailed answer. However, the parent product inside woocommerce does have a price (low / max) – actually the source code for a variation product is the same as for the parent product in this regard. I know your plugin adds structured data for the variation, but non the less – if I submit the parent product it is would be recognized and accepted. We have this setup inside facebook. Is there a difference between facebook’s rules and google`s?

    Thanks again so much!
    Peter

The parent product has a price-range which is not something you can upload into Google’s merchant center. This goes for more attributes like availability, stock status, etc etc.

Google’s and Facebook’s requirements are identical. In fact, Facebook, has copied the Google Shopping feed requirements.

    Best
    Eva
