I’m getting very tired of having to tell people that WordPress has removed the space in their Username and that’s why they can’t login. I’ve added a note to my registration page to warn about this but still about 90% of my new user registrations are coming through with two names in the Username field, where the space has been deleted.

This quirk of WordPress makes it very difficult for new user registrations and although I email each user where this has happened a lot of them just don’t come back.

It is important that the new member registration process is as easy and straightforward as possible and yet WordPress makes this hard for people.

Is there any good reason why spaces are not allowed in Usernames?

Btw. did you experience somewhere around the web that username, email address or password can contain space? ??

How would I edit the username field to say that it needs to be one name with no spaces?

WordPress user names actually can contain spaces.

However, if you use WordPress Multisite, the character set that is allowed for user names is much more limited, because in Multisite, user names are often used to create sub-sites and things of that nature. In that case, spaces will not be allowed.

We need to allow users to have spaces in their usernames. I see from the previous thread that his is possible. How would this be accomplished? Can you provide code Samuel Wood (Otto)?

I’ve not tried (I don’t use spaces or any non-alphabet/numbers in user names) but it should work for everything except multisite.

Rather than resurrecting a 6 month old topic can you please start your own topic if you need support?
