I see many topics posted here asking for help with comments not working. My problem is that they work too well. Although I have all of these options enabled:

    • An administrator must always approve the comment
    • Comment author must fill out name and e-mail

    • Comment author must have a previously approved comment

…all users (registered or not, logged in/authenticated or not) are allowed to post comments, which appear on the site immediately. It is my understanding that with these options enabled, I should have to approve all comments before they appear on the site. Is that correct?

The only way I have found to disable comments is to enable the “Users must be registered and logged in to comment” option, and disable “Anyone can register”.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

If you’re running any of the spam plugins, you may see some problems with moderation not acting as you expect. If you’re using Spam Karma 2, there’s a plugin available to reactivate the moderation queue, here: https://blog.ftwr.co.uk/wordpress/sk2-moderate-plugin/

Also, some of the unmoderated comments you’re seeing may be trackback spam, if you don’t have Bad Behavior installed, available here: https://www.homelandstupidity.us/software/bad-behavior/

The final option “Comment author must have a previously approved comment”, is negating your first option. With this option enabled, if someone comments on your blog, and you have approved one of their comments on another entry, their new comment will auto-approve and post to the blog.

Thanks, vkaryl and jeffinerlee! Jeffiner, your suggestion did the trick. Perhaps the final option I had set was having an impact on my testing. Thank you.
