• Hello,

I am trying to get rid of the wordpress directory that I installed in from before but unfortunately am running into issues. I followed steps exactly such as modifying the home page and siteurl in the database (SQL – phpmyadmin) and making sure my domain settings are correct (and also move the website files up 1 level outside the wordpress folder on the web server) but every time I try to load a subpage or child page, I would keep getting the HTTP 404 error. Not sure why and I don’t think I ever had this issue before with other websites. If I make sure to add the /wordpress/ to the end of the url and also make sure the website files are in the wordpress folder, it would work normally again.

    Anyone would know why?

    Thanks in advance!

Which steps did you follow? It should be the ones listed here. It sounds like you may have missed a step, perhaps #10 (permalink settings). You must visit the permalinks settings screen even if you know all is unchanged because visiting flushes the old rewrite rules.

If your .htaccess file has any rewrite or redirect rules outside of the WordPress section, they may need manual updating. WP only updates its own section.
