We are experiencing an issue with 2 of our WordPress sites where you cannot navigate to any other webpage with a question mark (?) in the URL as it simply redirects back to the homepage. The sites in question are https://www.kenbirddesigns.com.au and https://www.dryandravillage.org.au

It seems like there is a setting somewhere that tells it to redirect to the root if a question mark is detected at the beginning of the URL. Eg. https://www.kenbirddesigns.com.au/? redirects back to https://www.kenbirddesigns.com.au/ as a simple example.

Has anyone experienced this before and if so how did you solve it? I’ve checked the htaccess file and robots file to see if there is any redirection code but to no avail. We are also not using the redirection WP plugin and I’ve tried deactivating all plugins which did not help either.

  • Could changing your permalink structure help? (You can find it under settings/permalinks) – perhaps there is a typo if you are using a custom permalink or maybe you just need it setup to something else because of your server configurations possibly.

The other thing you could do is try upgrading WordPress and see if that helps at all…seems unusual!

Thanks for your response, I’ve reviewed the permalink structure and can confirm that changing the permalinks will work because there will be no question marks at the start of the URLs hence it will work.

But it doesnt solve the issue of the redirection based on ? at the start of the URL for these particular websites.

However the websites have worked before, definitely a week ago they were working OK.
