All pages but the homepage throw 404 errors

  • I am having EXACTLY the same problem as one that was posted 11 months ago (and is also reported on numerous sites on the Internet), however, a volunteer moderator just closed the thread that I posted to and IGNORANTLY stated that I don’t have the EXACT SAME problem (no, I’m NOT happy about that, especially after I’ve already WASTED many hours on this). In addition, he closed the thread, even though I’m having EXACTLY the same problem. So here it is, AGAIN:

    “All pages on my site, aside from the homepage, are giving me 404 errors. The pages definitely exist and the permalink structure is correct.”

    The only way my blog works is to set Permalinks to Default but as I’ve now had the blog up and running for quite some time, I don’t want to do that.

    The following “solutions” DO NOT WORK:

    “Can you try once saving permalink structure again to default. Check if it works:

    Admin > Settings > Permalinks

    If it works, swith it to desired permalink option and check it again.”

    Changing permissions of file directories DO NOT WORK.

    Changing the .htaccess DOES NOT WORK.

    Again, this is EXACTLY the SAME PROBLEM as one reported 11 months ago and many others are reporting it elsewhere.

  • The Exact Same Problem was resolved 11 months ago by deepak. If that solution has not worked for you then you do not have the Exact Same Problem.

    That is why you were requested to create your own thread. As they say “every server is a snowflake” meaning that every install of WordPress is unique. Your server may not be configured the same way as the original poster, you may not be using the same plugins, you may not have the same theme, and you may not be using the same version of WordPress as the OP.

    Additionally, that thread was already marked “Resolved”. You should never follow up in a resolved thread. It’s perfectly okay—preferable, actually—to create your own thread.

    Help us to help you by giving us more precise information:

    Have you been using permalinks for some time and they have been working? Or have you just now set up permalinks and then got this error?

    Changing the permissions of which directories? Changing the permissions to what?

    Changing the .htaccess DOES NOT WORK.

    Again, changing from what to what? Also, have you just tried deleting your .htaccess file and then rebuilding your permalinks?

    Also, from the original thread:

    Check with your hosts that mod_rewrite is running on your server.

    Have you done that? Has your host made any changes to your server? Have they sent you an email about this, or do they post such information on their website?

    Beyond that, have you tried all the usual troubleshooting procedures, as I’ve outline here?

    Everybody here is a volunteer. We have all spent (not wasted) many hours helping others out. I can understand your pique because situations like this are frustrating. But you provide folks with a lot of disincentive to help out. Keep calm, help us to help you by providing more information (especially, a link to the site in question), and we will get this figured out.

    A URL to look at would be cool too.
