    HI,

Whenever a make a page, the default category gets incremented by one.

    Is that normal?

    Thanks

  • Yup. I do believe it is.

Presumably, your concern is it is throwing off your category counts? If so, just don’t assign posts to the default category (create a new one for those). The category won’t show up if there aren’t any posts against it.

Let me clarify – when I make a “page” it gets counted in the default category. When I make a post, everything’s fine.

I want to know if that’s a bug, a bad install on my part, or if it’s normal.

I mean, “pages” aren’t supposed to be in a category at all, right?

Pages are essentially stored the same as posts in the WP database. As such, while typically category isn’t displayed for them, they do tend to fall into the “default” category.

What prompts the question? Are you seeing something (that you might link to) that looks wrong?

See, when I first installed wp, I made 3 pages and no posts.

Then I look in manage->categories->default category, and it lists the number of posts as 3. So I thought there was a problem with my install, that my wp was confused or broken. I was under the impression that pages were completely separate entities than posts, so I expected my default category to list the number of posts as 0.

But you’re saying a page is actually just a specially-handled default category post, so that means my install is just fine.

    Thanks for the clarification!
