The update to 3.8 via the admin panel failed (timed out), after disabling plug-ins, etc. I installed 3.8 manually.

I got it up and running, but have discovered that any non-default widget I used in my site (i.e. any widget from a plug-in) is now missing from the sidebars. And that’s most of them, and there were quite a few.

Is this because I still had plug-ins disabled when I did the manual install of 3.8? Is there a way to get everything back (I did a DB backup before the update) easily? Re-doing all the widgets by hand is not a very good option.

The site is https://www.rivendell-school.org and uses a child of the twentyeleven theme.

Well, it already being 1am and all I decided to make a second current database backup and give it a shot restoring the one I made right before the update. That did the trick! At least I was smart enough to make sure the plugins were all enabled before I backed things up. Whew.

I guess I’ll know better for next time. Why the easy update failed, now… that’s a different question.
