All new sites give a 404 error

  • I just activated the super admin and followed all the instructions to create multiple sites.

    However, when I go to create a new site, it seems to set it all up fine. When I click to visit it or edit it, it just gives me a 404 error.

    My original website is here: https://www.bodhicharya.org/

    I tried to set up a new website called “many Roads” and it gave me the address here: https://manyroads.bodhicharya.org/

    I really don’t want to mess any further with the settings until I hear back from someone. I am an novice when it comes to this. thanks.

  • Give the “Welcome to the multisite” sticky and look for the link about creating a network. I have a feeling that you forgor the steps about setting up your required dns wildcard. Forgive me for not copying and pasting the direct link. Not feeling too good tonight.

    edit: Just noticed that the subdomain is a Google landing 404 page. Please give the specific as to your setup. If you;re on Google (oh I forget the name of the program) you need to make sure that whatever you;re using supports mod_rewrite as well as the wildcard dns. I don;t think that they do.

    Thanks. I re-read that and that seems to be the problem:

    1. Apache must be configured to accept wildcards.
    1. Open up the httpd.conf file or the include file containing the VHOST entry for your web account.
    2. Add this line: ServerAlias *.example.com

    2. In the DNS records on your server, add a wildcard subdomain that points to the main installation. It should look like: A *.example.com

    I have no idea how to do either of those things. Can someone elaborate what I might be looking for?

    I had hoped to create a Sub-directory system, but it seemed to automatically create a Sub-domain system. I don’t suppose I can reverse this easily? Would this be an easier way to set the multisite up?

    The Apache vhost has to be done by your webhost.

    Or, if you want subfolders, just go edit your wp-config file again. Change subdomain TRUE to FALSE.

    Now go back to the Network menu item and snag the new htaccess rules. Should be good to go then.

    (also you’ll get /blog stuffed in the permalinks off the main blog)

    I mean visit the admin area of wordpress. click on the Tools -> Network menu item. Look at the htaccess rules in the box. there will be two new lines. paste the whole thing in your htaccess file, replacing what was there.

    It means in a subfolder install, it will put yourdomain.com/blog/the-rest-of-your-permalink.

    that’s why it wouldn’t let you pick subfdolders, cuz it will break your exisiting links.

    Yes, you can disable it. Yes, we’ve covered this in the forum many times.

    Oh, I see. Even my existing main blog would be subject to getting it’s permalinks changed. Not just the new sites I create. Is that correct?

    So my existing blog (www.Bodhicharya.org) would become https://www.Bodhicharya.org/Bodhicharya/, stuffing up any internal links I may have added to posts and pages manually.

    Thanks for bearing with me. I know I’m a bit slow. The site is quite large so I want to be sure that I don’t do something that will take days of work to repair.

    No, you;re existing MAIN domain woudl be the same, except the permalinks for the POSTS on the main blog only would get /blog/ stuffed in them. yes, literally”/blog/” – not blogname.

    the other subfolder sites would not. Just the main domain. Yes it can be removed. Yes we’ve talked about it here in the forums. A lot.

    I just followed your instructions and all went very well. I am very relieved! I’ve briefly checked the original site and all is well with the links. I also (finally) managed to create a new blog at the click of a button. great.

    When I made a new blog, and tried to visit the backend, I got the error.
