  • Rav, did you make changes to the theme files, like style.css? Changing any theme file is not recommended (for any theme, not just Responsive). As you’ve found out, any update to the theme will wipe out your changes. The best way to make changes to a theme is to create a child theme.

You can try contacting your host to see if they can restore your site from a backup. Most hosting services do daily backups, so if you tell them what date your site was last good, they can restore your site back to that date. Once it’s been restored, make sure you copy any files that you’ve changed over to a child theme so they don’t get overwritten again.

If your images are gone (from the wp-content/uploads folder I presume), I would think the hosting company restored an old backup…

I’m not sure if any files *added* to the template directory are removed in case of an automated theme update. I don’t think it should, can’t remember it ever did, but: does anyone know?

Any new files added to the theme folder should still be there after a theme update, but any existing theme files will get overwritten, so any changes to the theme files will be lost.
