I created a basic WordPress art portfolio at https://www.briankesselring.com in May 2012. I used the Media Library’s “Add New” function to upload his images. I then installed the Easy Rotator plugin to create a slideshow of his paintings on the home page. Everything worked FINE, easy as pie. In fact, the site had been working just fine for almost a year now. I have made NO recent changes.

Only when I ran a pingdom.com test on his site did I discover the horror that all of the images were bringing up 404 errors!

I immediately logged into the admin for the site and upon going to the Media Library, it lists 18 items but they all have broken thumbnail images, and if you try to view the image you get nothing.

Furthermore, I FTP’d into the site and checked the contents of the wp-contents/uploads/2012/05 folder and the images are still there, so why can’t the media library see them??

I have no idea what to make of this! How could this have happened? What should I do now?

Any help that anyone can provide would be so greatly appreciated!!!!!!

    Much thanks,
    Emily

Well I solved the problem myself. And it wasn’t wordpress related at all.

I’m using HostGator as my webhost and had recently enabled the “disable hotlinking” tool that they have in cpanel. Turns out that for the ‘allowed referrers’, they only list the add-on domains as subdomains of the main domain in the account (STUPID!), so I had to go in and manually add https://www.briankesselring.com and https://briankesselring.com into the “allowed referrers’ and voila, everything is working fine again.
