All CSS files moved to footer, still appear as “render blocking resources”
-
Hi, first of all thanks for an awesome plugin ??
As stated in the title, css files that I marked as “move to footer” still appear in Google speedtest as “render blocking resources”.
Sorry if there’s some clear explanation that I missed but what’s the use of “move to footer” then?
Thanks in advance!

Hello there @wagedu
Is there a URL where we could further inspect this?
Let me know if you wouldn’t like to post this publicly here. ??Thank you,
DimitrisHi, Dimitris,
thanks for the quick reply ??
What would be a more private way to show you the URL?
Hi @wagedu
I hope you are doing well.
You can forward the URL to our email [email protected] using this template:

Patrick FreitasHi @wagedu
I hope you are doing well.
Sorry, I forgot to mention to reply the thread when sending the information, as we work on a team, we suggest replying here when forwarding information to the email.
I can see five rendering block on your website, some assets we don’t suggest to move, for example, the theme CSS.
After flushing the caches, the plugin will take some time to optimize the files, this is because it will run the function when WordPress register the scripts and it is called from a user visiting the pages.
But in case it still not working as expected, the best troubleshooting test is a plugin and theme conflict.
Plugins and theme receive updates that can cause unwished issues, you can run the test following this flow:
https://premium.wpmudev.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/Support-Process-Support-Process.gifRemember to have a full backup or a staging website.
About the log file:
PHP Notice: register_rest_route was called
The plugin test would return if any plugin is causing the problem, but I also pinged the plugin developer to check if this is any known situation.
When I look at my database, yours is the only plugin using the full server path for any records.
The assets are regenerated when flushing the cache, once you migrate the website and flush the cache it should be ok no extra step is required.
We will update once hearing back from the plugin developer, kindly keep us posted about the troubleshooting results.
Best Regards
Patrick FreitasHi @wagedu
I took a closer look at our changelogs and found that the PHP notice will be fixed on the upcoming plugin update.
Best Regards
Patrick FreitasHi @wpmudevsupport12 Patrick,
thanks for the reply. But I think the main issue got confused amongst too many messages (from me, sorry)
The first message, with image attached, showed the only 2 css that I marked as “to the footer”. The theme CSS was not one of them.
And still, those two CSS appear as “render-blocking ressources”
Please, have a look at the image I attached in the first email.Of course I did the test with/without plugins. I wrote about it in the following email… so again, sorry for so many messages. I will repeat:
Those 2 extra CSS (for Smash Balloon Instagram Feed AND MC4WP: Mailchimp Top Bar) appear as render-blocking when EWWW Image Optimizer is enabled. When EWWW is not installed/enabled, Hummingbird seems to defer both CSS nicely.
So, there’s some kind of “problem’ between Hummingbird and EWWW Image Optimizer… which is probably the most installed image optimizer out there.
Do I really have to choose between Hummingbird and EWWW?
Please, drop me a hint.
Thanks in advance, cheers
Hello @wagedu,
If disabling the EWWW optimiser plugin makes everything work perfectly, I suppose you would need to check with the EWW plugin authors as to why that is happening as this seem to be some functional interference. Though I did try to replicate the same on my website but was not able to do so. Could you also try to replicate the same on a fresh site?
Alternatively, you can also add the critical layout and styling CSS to Hummingbird-> Asset Optimisation-> Tools and then switch to the advanced area of asset optimization and move all of your CSS files to the footer area to check if that works for you.
On another part, you can also combine and inline the CSS and then check how that works for you. Do let me know how things work for you.
Thank you,
Prathamesh PalveSeeing as Ewww is the more installed plugin here, I see it as yours being incompatible with them, not the other way around. Also, yours is the one changing behavior, not theirs. That’s why I’m checking with you.
Anyway, everything you mention has nothing to do with my issue. I was talking about moving to the footer already, and it not working with other css.
There’s no conversation regarding my critical layout and styling.
Please, stay with the issue. If you won’t check the difference with/without Ewww so be it, but don’t change the focus, please. ThanksHello @wagedu,
I apologise if my earlier reply seemed to be focussing less on the issue. Let me try and explain a bit more to you.
According to the email you sent us earlier, I did pull up a test with EWWW and Hummingbird active on my site. When I pulled up this test, I did not have any other plugin active and not server level or external caching active too.
When I pulled up a test with that, I was not able to replicate the case as you said in the reports you initially sent to us via mail which is why I requested you to try the same on a fresh site where there would be only EWWW and Hummingbird plugin.
I agree that EWWW has a lot more downloads than and Hummingbird and that is a great plugin too. However, we do have a lot of users Hummingbird and EWWW together too but we have not heard similar issues from anyone yet. There can be possibilities that a plugin with many more downloads may encounter an issue or conflict with some other plugin. I am not saying it does in this case as I was not able to replicate the same on my end.
Could you please send us an email at [email protected] so that we can discuss the reports you sent to us more openly and try to reach a resolution?
Thank you,
Prathamesh PalveHi @wpmudev-support7 ,
I already sent you an email a couple days ago, following Patrick’s instructions as “Attn: Patrick Freitas”.
Should I send a new one? No problem. Just, please, tell me what should I write in the subject to avoid confusion. And what do you need me to send/attach in it.Thanks in advance
Hello @wagedu,
I’m sorry I missed that thing. Kindly send us a new email following Patrick’s instruction as “Attn: Patrick Freitas”. Do mention the link to the following thread as a reference.
Thank you,
Prathamesh Palve
