• I have a website that had a lot of comments until last month. When I logged into the admin today I found that they were all gone. The site is completely down! What could have happened? How to solve? This has never happened before and I have not installed or removed any plugins.

  • Have you checked the “silly” things first? Are they in the trashbin or in a spam folder somewhere? Do any comment appear when you go to your admin panel and then to the comments options?

    Also, this isn’t natural behaviour at all. Have you noticed any other things that are off from your website? Somebody must have done something like e.g. changed a setting to disable comments (then they should still show up) OR used a plugin and removed it after…

    If you have back-ups, the comments are usually saved in the database so you can always roll back if needed. Or export the comments table and reimport it to your current db.

    Thank you so much for your feedback and interest in helping! The comments settings had indeed been turned off, but comments that had already been made should still appear in the list via the admin panel shouldn’t they? What I found strange, was completely zero!

    Indeed. What happens if you enable the comments again?
    Also, if they are truly gone then… I’d revert to a database back-up from when you still had those comments. IF the new content is mission critial, you always could only import the comments table back into the database.

    If you don’t know SQL, I’d ask your host for support to extract the data from a recent database backup to restore.

    @nekojonez Good morning!
    When I turned on the comments nothing happens – the ones that have already been made and the comment box do not appear…

    @pat1701 I’m sorry for replying so late. I just restarted work and time is crazy.

    In this case, I think you should try the part underneath I suggested in my previous reply.

    There are some reason of all comments disappeared from the site. If you are marking up a website, the first thing you’ll want to do is check the other device views for your MarkUp. When you click a link to view a MarkUp comment, it will take you to the default desktop view. If the comment was left on the tablet or mobile view, you will need to navigate into that view to see the comment. You can quickly see how many comments are available within each device view by clicking the device icon towards the bottom of your MarkUp.
    You might also lose your pins/comments if the website changes the content that you previously marked up. If you are commenting on a site that gets regular updates, you might want to save a PDF version of your website to mark up so you can ensure your pins stay in place as long as you need them to.
    Another reason you might have lost your pins/comments could be missing is if you are marking up a website with a malformed canonical URL. If your website was coded with a dynamic canonical URL or it simply wasn't coded right, you could experience an issue with your pins/comments disappearing. If you are able to ensure your website has a properly formatted canonical URL without any dynamic parts to it, that will ensure your pins/comments stay in place. If you are not able to alter your site's canonical URL, you can save a PDF version of your website and mark up that version instead to ensure everything stays in place.
