Akismet plugin keeps asking for API key even after entering it multiple times

  • I wasn’t sure where this should go, but since the Akismet plugin is installed by default I thought I’d try here. Ever since I have activated the Akismet plugin and entered my API key, it still tells me it is not active and to enter my API key. Whenever I enter my API key on the Akismet plugin config page, it takes about a minute or two and then the same page shows except only the header without anything below it. I would really like to use this plugin since when I ran Drupal, comment and trackback spam quickly became a serious problem on my site and I have no idea what is going wrong here.

    I also have other issues, like the Dashboard page showing up mostly blank with only the page headers and blank spots for the recent activity, and that posting by email does not work at all. If it helps, my site is hosted by 4dWebHosting who has worked quite well for me over the years.

    Any help would be much appreciated.

  • Are you sure you have the right API? You get them when you sign up for a wordpress.com blog.

    If you head over to https://wordpress.com and sign up for a new blog, you should be allocated one automatically. You don’t need to do anything with that blog, it’s the only way of getting a WordPress API key at the moment.

    I’m not sure what’s wrong with the dashboard, but posting by email only works if your wp-mail.php is run regularly. It’s easiest to set up a cron to do this automatically. If you navigate your web browser to the wp-mail.php file then you may find your email posts show up.

    I have a wordpress.com account and that API key does not seem to work. Checking my error log doesn’t reveal any errors from any time I try to enter my API key, too. Same goes with the dashboard, I don’t see any errors in the log file. As for posting by email, I did notice some errors in the log file about being unable to connect to my POP3 server when I had the wp-cron plugin. Going to wp-mail.php in my browser resulted in the same thing.

    The slowness is also very bothersome. Attempting to log in or to get to the admin part of the site is very slow, usually taking 1 to 2 minutes to get there.

    This is all baffling me since Drupal worked fine on my site (except for constantly breaking when upgrading) and generally my ISP seems to have stuff setup pretty well.
