Akismet not filtering spam automatically

I have akismet installed correctly with an activation code and it says it is active. However it is not filtering the spam comments. If I click on the “check for spam” then it will correctly put them into spam.
Is there a way to make it do it automatically?
I have tried with both “strictness” settings and get the same result.
