Akismet checks your comments against the Akismet web service to see if they look like spam or not. You need a WordPress.com API key to use this service. You can review the spam it catches under “Manage” and it automatically deletes old spam after 15 days.

Yes, but I don’t have my welcome email. All of my old mail was deleted when my host changed servers. On all of my pages, under the links (Dashboard Write Manage etc) it has a blue box that says “Akismet is not active. You must enter your WordPress.com API key for it to work.” and has a link to here There is a box I’m suposed to put the API in and next to it a link saying (What is this?). The main point of that page is this:

“To find your key go to your dashboard and then click on “Profile” (or “My Account”) and you should see a sentence that says “Your WordPress.com API key is:” followed by a string of 12 letters and numbers. There you have it! You can copy and paste that string to any place where it is asked for by a service you want to use.

But neither My Account or Profile are on the dashboard, or any other page I’ve looked through. There’s a My Profile page, but that is just the sidebar content.

Is there someway I can get the API emailed to me again or something?

The main point of that page is that you’re logging into the wordpress.COM account you just created. Not to be confused with your own self-hosted blog from www.remarpro.com.

Different – com vs org.

Yes, this means you have a wordpress.COM blog. No, you need not use it, you just want the API key that it gives you.

Oh Wait I think I get it now… So I have to go to wordpress.COM, register there and they will send me an API number… is that correct?

Ya know? As far as I know, it’s only useful for Akismet.

Hi there – someone else who is really confused by this whole API key thing… After realising I had to sign up for a .COM account (why I have no idea), I received an email to activate the account. I did this, then I received another email with a username and login… No API Key.

It then tells you to go to your My Account panel – on .COM this is top LEFT but it tells you that this is top RIGHT so I assumed that they mean .ORG instead. Nevertheless, I have looked in the My Account settings of both my .COM and .ORG accounts, and I don’t see an API Key anywhere.

Can anyone help me?

ah got it! Apologies… You have to sign in to your .COM account, THEN click on the BLOG to go to the Manage settings within the BLOG.

I hate to look a gifthorse in the mouth, but there seems to be a step missing in the instructions… If this was mentioned it would avoid confusion.

I’m a little confused why I have to waste WordPress space by creating a blog on their webspace, just so I can get an API key for a completely different blog…?

Log into your .COM account.
Click on Users.
Click on “Your Profile”.

ok, we overlapped. As you noticed, while creating the .COM account, you don’t have to create an actual blog. There’s another option there for “Just a username, please.”

Either way, that’s your API key for automattic stuff (wordpress.com, akismet and whatever else gets dreamed up) and you can use it on multiple www.remarpro.com blogs.

So, will that still work (getting a .COM account with just a username to get the API key) if you don’t have *either* a wordpress.COM or www.remarpro.com blog? Mine was set up by my webhosting guy in my own directory, so it’s just mywebpage.com/blog – no wordpress anywhere in the URL (even though I’m using WP).

yes. (the url of your blog doesn’t matter. Just so long as you have a WordPress blog using the Akismet plugin)
