AIOWPS encountered an error when trying to write to your .htaccess file.

  • I deactivated and reactivated the plugin today and an now getting prompted:
    Would you like All In One WP Security & Firewall to re-insert the security rules in your .htaccess file which were cleared when you deactivated the plugin? Yes No

    However when I select yes, I get:
    AIOWPS encountered an error when trying to write to your .htaccess file. Please check the logs.

    I don’t know where the logs are or how to fix the problem. The permisisons on my .htaccess file appear to be 777.

    Any suggestions how I go about trouble-shooting this?

    Hi webtomeasure Go to WP Security -> Filesystem Security -> File Permissions and make sure that all permissions are correct.

    Thanks! I can see now that it is looking in my WP directory URL for the .htaccess, which is different from my root URL directory, where the .htaccess file actually is.

    I can copy it to the WP directory, but is that correct?

    Hi why do you have a .htaccess in the root of your website and not in the wordpress directory?

    If you click on save permalink files in wordpress that will create a .htaccess file in the wordpress folder.

    Just a thought?

    If the .htaccess file is in the root of your server then it is either there to create some sort of folder security protection and or it is redirecting to your wordpress folder meaning you have wordpress installed in a folder and not in the root of your server.

    Yes – for security reasons I took advice not to install WordPress in the root URL so it’s installed in a sub-folder to throw the bots crawling for admin access.

    The site breaks if I remove the .htaccess in the root of the site, however I copied it to the WordPress sub-folder and was able to get AIOWPS to update it successfully and keep it happy. My only issue is that now I have two .htaccess files and I don’t know if the security measures put in there by the plugin in the sub-folder version have any effect now, would you know?

    Hi webtomeasure if your site sits in a sub directory then you cannot delete the .htaccess file from the root. The reason is because it needs to tell the server to display your site in the correct path. As you found out removing the .htaccess file will generate an error.

    Copying the file from the root to the WordPress folder is okay as long as you check to make sure you don’t have entries that will crash in the future or perform redirect loops. The .htaccess file in the WordPress folder should only contain the following plus this plugins security entries and what ever you decide to add in the future.

    In regards to your question,

    All the security features added by the plugin will work. Remember don’t delete the .htaccess file in the root or else you will see a server error.

    Sorry for not responding earlier, for some reason I missed your last reply.

    I solved the issue as you said by leaving a copy in the root and making a copy in the WordPress folder. Also your clarification above informs me that the security measures will work, so that’s great to know.

    Can somebody help me regarding this same issue.
    I have the same problem but this is what my log says:

    [04/27/2015 7:41 AM] – FAILURE : AIOWPSecurity_Installer::run_installer() – Update of option settings failed upon plugin activation!
    [04/27/2015 7:41 AM] – FAILURE : Unable to write to .htaccess – server type not supported!
    [04/27/2015 7:41 AM] – FAILURE : AIOWPSecurity_Deactivation::run_deactivation_tasks() – Could not write to the .htaccess file. Please check the file permissions.

    My site is hosted on windows shared hosting, and i tried to change all permissions but no success.

    Have you contacted your hosting provider and asked them why a plugin can’t write to a file on this server?

    @mbrsolution i saw that thread but there is no sollution there. Actually you just told julianr that some of the developers will look into the issue…

    I got response from my hosting provider and they told me that unfortunately some plugins are not compatible with ASP hosting and this was one of them ??

    I really like this plugin and want to be able to use it.
