I know this has been asked quite a bit (I’ve read all the different threads), but I have a quick question that maybe you can clarify for me.

I have the ‘Dynamically Generate Sitemap’ checkbox checked. I get that it doesn’t create an actual file, but is updated on the fly. However, when using this feature, how does one submit an actual XML file to Google and Bing through the Webmaster Tools area on both Search Engines?

Clicking that checkbox off creates a static file; do I then point both Search Engines to that file, let them index the pages and then revert to the Dynamic Sitemap?

I just want to make sure that both Google and Bing are getting my pages in the Sitemap file and that I can verify how many have been indexed next to how many have been submitted.

    Thanks.

You don’t need to uncheck the option at all.
While there’s no static xml file stored on your webserver, an xml file is provided for Google, etc on the fly/dynamically.

Google/Bing can’t distinguish between the two settings (they don’t know the difference between a dynamically generated xml file and one that’s permanently stored on your server).

Well, that’s what I thought, however as a test I deleted the sitemaps off of both Google and Bing. I then removed the two sitemap files from my server. I went back into AIOSEO and set the plugin to dynamically create the files, then checked both the Google and Bing Webmaster tools for sitemap files.

There are none there; “No sitemaps found for this site.”. This is where I’m confused. The plugin does say that it has submitted one to both search engines, but how can I verify that (or check the Pages Submitted/Paged Indexed fields?

    Thanks for the help.

You should be able to see your sitemap at example.com/sitemap.xml (or different if you’re configured a different sitemap url).
Google/Bing neither know nor care whether it’s dynamically generated. From their perspective, it’s the same.
AIOSEOP submits the sitemap for you, but for it to show up in webmaster tools, you can follow the instructions at https://semperplugins.com/documentation/

Ok, so I can see it showing up in the Google Webmaster Tools – it updates frequently and shows my Web Pages Submitted and Web Pages indexed. It’s working fine.

In Bing, however, I do the same thing and instead it comes up with Status: Failed with the following error message:

Download of the sitemap or feed failed

We encountered an issue when we tried to download this sitemap. Please check the sitemap for errors and resubmit the sitemap.

    Any ideas?

If Google can crawl your sitemap fine then there is no reason why Bing shouldn’t be able to crawl it.

My thoughts exactly, but it keeps giving me this error. So, I guess no other ideas.

    Must be a Bing thing.

Yeah, I wish I could give you a better answer but unless something on your site or server is specifically blocking the Bing crawler then there’s no reason for them not to be able to crawl it.
