Following a core upgrade, I can no longer change the roles or passwords of my users. If I try to edit a user profile, I see “ERROR: Please enter a nickname.” However, the nickname field is filled in and saves properly.

Changes I make to the profile fields (including the nickname field) are saved, but changes to fields like role or password are not saved. The message is always “ERROR: Please enter a nickname.”

The site I’m working on uses a CRM plugin called PauPress. It’s not a plugin I have encountered elsewhere, so I’m not sure if it’s a factor. It worked prior to this WordPress upgrade.

I have found this same problem reported by users of other plugins, but can’t find any resolution.

  • Hello,
Try to deactivate all of plugin and then activate and test it one by one.
You will get the right plugin which causes this problem.
If it doesn’t solve your problem then let me know.
    Thanks.

Thank you ThemesGrove. That was it. The problem is the result of an old CRM plugin called PauPress, more recently renamed PressPoint. I’ll have to check with the site owner to see if they want to try upgrading the plugin to a more recent version. The older version of the plugin is no longer compatible with recent WP releases.
