On LynnHappens.com I just did the upgrade to 3.1. I kind of regret it now. My category menu at the top finds no posts, but in the control panel under posts – categories, they’re all still there and appropriately tagged. How does a novice, non-coder, get them back?

    Thanks

    try:

    – re-saving your permalink structure at Settings/Permalinks in your admin panel. If WordPress cannot automatically edit the .htaccess file, it will provide manual instructions after saving.

    – deactivating all plugins to see if this resolves the problem? If this works, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).

    – switching to the default theme to rule out any theme-specific problems?

Thanks. Will try your first suggestion, first. I can’t reinstall the theme, I’d lose too many customizations. I checked for category related plugins and found none, though I use some on my other sites. Will try that also..

Failed.. wish your suggestions had worked. Now, I’m kind of at a loss, since the menu buttons can’t find the categoried posts but all the categories and post tags are still in place.

Is there some code I can fix.. that I can cut and paste into my editor?

These steps are basic troubleshooting procedures to see what is the cause of this problem.

Not a reinstall. Just activate the default theme. You can always re-activate your current theme if this is not the cause of the problem.

Did you deactivate all your plugins?

But if I switch from one theme back to the next, will I not lose the changes I made to colors and other css items when I switch back? I’m too novice to be able to get that sorted through again any time soon.

I deactivated one. I actually deleted it as I was planing to anyway. The others are so basic and have nothing to do with categories..can try.. and report back..

I’ve heard reports of other people with similar problems after the upgrade. It seems I’m not the only one and a 3.1.something else is in order shortly.

So, now I stand totally corrected. I did have a plugin that enabled me to make the “Uncategorized” category invisible. Now it appears, and I have to find another way to remove it, as it won’t let me delete “Uncategorized.” But, everything else works now and I’m grateful for your help..

    Glad you got it solved.

If your theme has an options page in the wp-admin it writes the customizations to the database. So you can always re-activate with the same customizations present.

But I don’t see the “Uncategorized” category in your menu?

Thanks, and thanks for your help. I can’t believe I hadn’t noticed that category invisibility plugin the first few times I looked at them. It was something I installed two years ago, at least.

I re-classified the few posts that were “uncategoried” and it went away from the menu. It’s a much simpler solution than using a plugin!
