After previewing Custom Design, header only shows dimmed

I’m throwing together a quick WordPress page (not hosting, but using wordpress.com). I made some customizations, added a header and then, just happened to click on Custom. This removed all my settings. I found a link to remove the Custom features or Pay, but the damage was done. Now my beautiful image only shows up as a cloudy-grey field of nothing.
