After Move not reading CSS or Image files

I did a move to a new server also on my lan. Some interesting problems showed up.

1. I had used localhost for my database host and url on the production machine. When I moved it to another machine on the same lan, it kept referring back to the client localhost for the pages and database. I changed some things in wp-login, and wp-config and now it seems to work ok excpet its not reading the image files, the css files, and I can’t log in to the wp-admin page. I changed the password in the mysql database and all that happens is the login page sits there for a minute then the user and password fields go blank. If I enter a wrong password, it gives me the normal response (shaking ).

Any ideas on how to make this work? I followed the Codex on moving without changing the url or location. I basically used the same directories on the new server as on the old. My thinking is that I needed to change the URL before I moved things.
