When entering the site with the admin name/wp-admin the password field comes up ok, but then a 404 error comes up saying page not found.

I can not get access to the site to make edits. I have tried on 2 browsers and tried clearing cookies.

    HELP ! Please !!!

  • Have you tried copying a new (same version) dashboard.php?

Also try logging into wp-admin and then when dashboard fails to load go to this link to see if it loads:
    https://www.rebaxter.net/wp-admin/options-general.php

Have you tried (300 msgs in two days I forget) just for a minute renaming your plugins directory, create new plugins directory in its pace with same permssions?

I tried removed all plugins by renaming the plugin directory.
I have not tried your other thoughts but will now…

    after logging in this
    https://www.rebaxter.net/wp-admin/options-general.php
produces the same result – will try the dashboard suggestion now

opps where is dashboard.php located? Remember I have loaded and am running from fresh wp-includes and wp-admin directories from new install

    (@danmschell)

    Why when I corrected
/** Load WordPress dashboard API */
    require_once(‘/home/rebaxter/public_html/wp-admin/includes/dashboard.php’);
did this not produce a different result. This says this code is not executing since it was wrong…. is there a way to make this code execute… or am I wrong about this conclusion
    THANKS AGAIN FOR HELPING ME

    (@danmschell)

OH found dashboard.php, but i am already running from a clean copy since I downloaded a fresh wp-admin directory and renamed my old wp-admin to wp-adminOLD

As best I can determine /home/rebaxter/public_html is correct however I am not sure. How can I double check from the Cpanel?

If you have a cPanel you should be able to look along the left-side and see your Home directory.
    Try copying dashboard.php anyway….

    (@danmschell)

/home/rebaxter is listed as the home directory just wasn’t sure if public_html is always the same
    Will re-copy dashboard now

    (@danmschell)

Recopied dashboard it has today date not yesterday as does the other files in the wp-admin directory.

Just to make sure I did not dream it and to try it again … I renamed plugins directory and created a blank new plugins directory. All plugins stopped working but the wp-admin problem is still there.

would viewing page source after the wp-admin login and the 404 error shed any light on the problem?

Viewing the 404 page would not help. At this point I don’t have any other suggestions wihtout actually logging in myself and seeing the php files. Could do that if you want. Otherwis maybe some others have some other suggestions.
