I changed the slugs of two of my pages with Yoast SEO in order to try to improve SEO. Now, if I enter site:mywebsite.com in Google I get all of my pages listed plus those two old ones that are not in my sitemap anymore as their slugs had been changed. Google console also keeps a record of them as indexed but not in my sitemap. If I enter the URL of those two, then I get “Oops! That page can’t be found.” message. What should I do in such a case? Can I delete those two extra pages whose URL had been changed and not in my sitemap anymore? How can I do so? Don’t they cause any problems?
In the future how should I change the slugs in the url if I want to test its impact on search ranking?
Thank you for your help in advance.

  • Hi,

Google may need to recrawl them. Can you confirm if you use Inspect any URL that the issue is resolved? This will force Google to update the index. You may need to use it several times. This guide explains more:?https://kb.yoast.com/kb/fetch-as-googlebot/.

Thank you. I’ve run the URL Inspection tool in Goggle Search Console. So, I might need to do it more times. Then, will these pages disappear? Don’t I need to do a redirecting to the site with the new URL extension? I just do not know what would be the proper steps to take when someone changes the slug. Thanks for your help.

Yes, if you’ve already used the URL Inspection Tool eventually Google will update it’s index. Regarding redirects, yes, it’s beneficial to create a redirect if you change a page’s URL. The premium version of Yoast SEO include’s a redirect manager that will automatically create a redirect when a page’s URL changes and we have more information on this here: https://yoast.com/wordpress/plugins/seo/redirects-manager/
