• After upgrading successfully to 4.4, am unable to Upgrade or Install Themes and Plugins.

Every attempt gets an error indicating the directory could not be created, for example:

An error occurred while updating GoodBye Captcha: Could not create directory. /public_html/wp-content/plugins/goodbye-captcha/

And of course the .maintenance file is left behind, which I have to manually remove.

    I have tried:

    1. Changing directory perms for wp-content and subs to 775 and 777 (they are at 775 now, were at 755)
    2. Disabling all Plugins
    3. Switching to the 2015 theme

I have not had any problems with this install prior to the 4.4 upgrade, even as late as last night, before the upgrade, I installed a couple new templates (no they were not activated) successfully.

    Any help is appreciated.

Did you back up your site first? If so rename your root folder and re-upload your site.

We will have to see if they fix this and put out a fix. Definitely a fault with WP 4.4

    @patdundee
Our website is back up and running thank goodness but wont be doing any updating of the plugins until they fix WP 4.4 ??

Experiencing the same issues after upgrading to 4.4; I can’t upgrade any plugins through the Dashboard. I’m receiving the same “Could not create directory” error message when I attempt to.

I forgot to say I was updating through the Dashboard. Now Our Theme login needs updating but I know if I do the update it will throw our website back into maintenance mode and will get the same error about “Could not create directory” message.
    Hope this gets resolved quickly

I have just ran the wp 4.4 update to all my sites and on one of them it asked to update the database – and now the site cannot see any of the images – yet on ftp the server shows the images still there in uploads.
The media library just shows grey squares with no images inside.

How can I reconnect the images as they were – why did the images get broken?

Could you provide some server configuration settings:

    – Running HTTPS?
    – PHP Version
    and anything you can provide.

So far some things I feel are important to note.
    – Most of these issues are happening when FTP is needed to update.
    – Some are reporting that downgrading to a backup resolve the issue with the plugins/themes updating.

its a straight forward wp site running on genesis framework with custom css and custom functions seperated out so when upadtes are run, it doesn’t normally break the site. I managed to update all sites ok except for one and the result is its not seeing the images. I did the update via wordpress dashboard.

What would have been the ‘database’ update – it didn’t ask for this when updating my other sites. I took a back up of my database …. but the media images are there – they aren’t lost, they are on the server – just the update has broken the communicatin between wp and the server.

    PHP version – 5.5 I believe.
    not running https
all updates were performed – but I did do wordpress update first.

Hmmm.. I updated my Themes and plugins after doing the 4.4 Update, but I did the updates from the /wp-admin/update-core.php page since I don’t like the UI mechanism on the plugins page.
