• Hello,

I was after some advice on rebuilding my website, and a lot of people have recommended WordPress.

I originally built it using Moonfruit, as I know ZERO about coding, and Moonfruit enabled me to do a fully hosted, easy to build site. However, Moonfruit is entirely flash-based. Which is apparently a very bad thing, and it also doesn’t run on mobiles/tablets etc.

So basically I wondering whether I would be able to rebuild my site from scratch and create a full e-commerce website for my jewellery which looks exactly the same as it alreay does (www.laurengrace.co.uk) using WordPress? I’ve read all the ‘Introduction to…’ blurbs, but I confess I am a bit baffled.

Many thanks for any assistance or advice you could offer.

  • After briefly reviewing your site, you will definitely be able start from scratch and do a better job. That said, there are some things you might want to improve in the process. I’m sure you’d want to take some lessons learned and incorporate them in the new site rather than simply making it look identical to the old one.

The good news is that this will not only make the site more serviceable in the long run but it’s also a great opportunity to freshen it up with a redesign. Finding a new theme can be fun!

Thanks for the advice Gabe – what would you change?

I would still like it to look the same – would that be possible using WordPress? I’m happy to spend time learning how to use WordPress if I can make it look how I want, but if I’d not be able to make it look how I wanted using the program, I’d rather look at other options.

    Thanks again for the help.

It’s possible to make it look very similar. Your best bet is to find a theme that will get you close to your existing design.

As for changes, my initial thoughts:

    – Rather than having just one big block of links in the right nav. You could have categories to help group your products.

    – Your top nav doesn’t fit well and is difficult to read.

    – The header graphic could be improved.

    – ‘Shop by collection’ links take up way too much room along the top of each subpage.

Thanks for the info – it doesn’t look anything like what you’ve described on my screen! I have links on the left of the page that group jewellery by collections and the ‘shop by collection’ links are under the collection links at the left of the screen.

I guess if it looks so different on different screens, that’s another reason to switch to WordPress!

    Thanks for your help.

Many sites, especially flash sites, should be tested on ensure that they play nicely with different OS and browsers.
