Advice about migrating existing html site to wordpress

  • Hi,

    I have an existing website, which has been on the go for nearly 20 years, and was originally written in Frontpage (don’t say anything!). Its just my personal homepage, but there’s 260+ pages, and some of the pages have been heavily indexed by Google, are highly-ranked, and generate lots of interesting emails for me!

    I’d like to re-do my site using WordPress, but how do I go about not losing all those precious google hits?

    For example, my page https://www.roblightbody.com/mini/brochures/index.htm

    Thanks for any advice about how to manage my move to wordpress.

  • Firstly install WordPress in a sub domain, leave your existing site running during your transition.

    You will have to do extensive Copy/Paste operations on a page by page basis to transfer your content. Suggest that you keep track of the old/New URLs in a spreadsheet while doing this.
    You can keep the “google link juice” by doing a redirect in your .htaccess
    The spreadsheet will help you create the list of redirects.

    When the time comes you archive your old website and move your new site using a plugin like DUPLICATOR.
