Hi Pascal Birchler @swisspidy hope you can respond to that,

We have serious concerns that web stories are damaging our website due to the design. When a user visits a web story from search they see the attached, obviously but as you can see there is no way for the user to navigate to my website. These are dead end links where a user has to press the back button to go back to Google search, which greatly benefits Google but completely sucks for the site owners who have spent a lot of time creating these and having many problems along the way. Is there no way of making it so that there is some sort of navigation so that users will engage with our platform, rather than pressing the back button all the time and leaving our website.

Also I am not an expert but will this not affect the bounce rate of my website. Can you confirm if the bounce rate is part of google’s algorithm and if web stories will have an impact on this?

Surely there must be some way of resolving this as from a website owners point of view, I do not feel that it is fair to lose traffic through this.

    Hi Emil

Bounce rate is not a ranking factor as far as I know. I recommend you to check out Google Search Central for any SEO questions you might have.

While there is an open feature request for adding a close/back button to stories, the recommended approach is to add call-to-actions to your stories that link back to your main website.

So for example if you have a recipe story, you could link to your main archive of all recipes, to a blog post with detailed instructions, or perhaps simply your homepage.

And if you use the built-in Web Stories block to embed stories in a carousel or so, these stories would then open in a lightbox which does have a close button.

Hi Pascal, many thanks for the detailed info with provided articles.

The mentioned feature request would be seconded by us.
As we display our webstories using the shortcodes and not the widget it seems that the close button is missing, therefore the feature would be a great addition.

Hi can you confirm that the call to action function is actually available in the editor as described in this article as you can see in this screenshot the functions of the page attachment are limited.

Yes that’s the right section. We just don’t currently support using arbitrary colors for the call to actions, nor “inline” page attachments.

    Okay.
