• Hello all.

On my website (https://www.oatquestionoftheday.com) it seems to me there is random ads in the content in random pages. They are not always there and just come up randomly. I changed my theme and upgraded wordpress on the same day and then this began to occur, so I don’t know the co-incidence. My theme is Graphene. I did have Adsense (it was on a sidebar widget anyways) but it has been de-activated. So I do not know where these ads are coming from. Any help?

You might not be able to see it (might take a couple of refreshes), but here is a screenshot of what I see:

Any help would be appreciated :/

  • I don’t see any ads on your site, so it’s very possible that your local computer has been infected with malware.

Do you see ads on other sites? Did you check your site on other computers?

Mark: Like I said, they randomly show up. 90% of the time they are not there, but they do show up randomly on random pages. I do not think it is my computer as it was my friend who brought it to my attention on her computer. I didn’t know what she was talking about until I randomly saw it the next day on my computer. I checked with my host (hostgator) and they state they don’t put up any ads either.

    Really odd :S

    Hi Ten Stitches,

I looked at your screenshot, and saw the same ad on your site. Looks like something is unfortunately injecting the ad into your page.

This can be due to a malicious plugin, or your WordPress installation may have been hacked.

I would start by disabling all your plugins, and re-enabling them one by one to see if one of them is the cause. If not, please read through the following WordPress FAQ on hacked sites, which will provide you with a list of things to try.

If you’re still having trouble, just reply here.

Right, I saw the code on the page (though it doesn’t show an image cause the file doesn’t exist) but now it’s gone again…so it’s kind of hard to figure out where it comes from.

You might want to check your templates and other code to see if there are any references to that abs domain name that’s present in your screenshot.

I see the ad from the above post with an Iphone. I am sorry but it seems your site is hacked. Do you or your hosting company have a full backup of your site? The fastest and most sure way to repair your site is to restore from a backup made before the hack.

Without a backup your only permanent solution is to repair the site. Follow this guide.

When you’re done, you may want to implement some (if not all) of the recommended security measures.

I went through my files and couldn’t find any link to the website/ad being shown.

Within the last 2 days, I updated WordPress (I know I should have done it a while ago) and changed the theme.

I installed 2 security plugins that scanned for malware as recommended in that FAQ and they found nothing.

However, in my plugins I DID find a plugin called Boggle Woggle Adsense. I do not remember installing such a thing. When I tried searching for it on WordPress, it couldn’t even find it. When I tried to deactivate it (and then delete it), I got an error at first, then it worked second time.

After deleting it I have refreshed on and on and I can’t see it anymore. Can any of you guys confirm?

I really do appreciate the help from all of you by the way.

    Hey Ten Stitches,

That is awesome! I tried a bunch of pages, including the ones where I saw the ad before, and it no longer appears.

Great job. Keep the security plugins around, and read up on how to secure your WordPress install so that it doesn’t happen again. If you didn’t install the plugin yourself, someone else may have gotten access to it.

This is a good place to start:

    wanderingbedou,

Thank you for that confirmation. So relieved it got fixed (permanently hopefully). Thank you for that helpful link. I will take security more seriously now!

Thanks to all for your help!

Don’t forget to change your passwords, both WordPress admin users (and check if there are any accounts you didn’t create) and your FTP password.
