• Hello all,

After installing a new WP site in November of 2013 and running a couple of months on whatever the current WP version was at that time, I updated WP itself to the latest version 3.8.1. Everything went fine on that. Nearly all of my 5-6 plugins also had updates available, and so I embarked on updating those one at a time. The fourth one, or so, was the UpdraftPlus plugin.

Although the admin area gave me notification that the update went fine on UpdraftPplus, as soon as I hit the link to return to the plugin page, I got a blank white screen, and now I get that same screen in all three major browsers when I attempt to access ANY area or page of my admin panel. The site itself still appears to be working fine, it’s just that I can’t see anything in the admin area.

Since that completely eliminated the ability to deactivate the Updraft plugin from the admin area, I used FTP to try to delete the entire Updraft directory in my WP plugins folder. Alas, while apparently all of the files in that directory were deleted, several folders and subfolders were not and are some how persistent past all efforts to delete via ftp.

How do I get my admin panel back? Any help much appreciated!

  • Normally you would use ftp or the file manager supplied by your host and change the name of the plugin to UpdraftPplus-old

I tried changing the name of the folder before deleting it, and that didn’t work, although I didn’t append “old” (I think I appended “deactivated”.) The point is now I’ve got a folder called “updraftplus” that I can’t fully delete, at least not some of the included folders, which are all empty of actual files.

Are you saying I should now rename the folder and append “old”?

    Try to reinstall the plugin.

Okay, after some more poking around, I traced the problem not to UpdraftPlus per se but to NextGen Gallery, which had also wiped my admin panel out months ago when I first installed it, though I did eventually get it working after some updates (I’ve now forgotten exactly what cured the issue).

This time, what apparently happened was that just updating WP and/or the few other plugins (including Updraft) suddenly caused the finicky NextGen Gallery to misbehave again, and I had not yet updated IT. In view of my previous problems with that plugin, I was saving it until last. I will now try to update NextGen to the latest and then reactivate it and see if I still have an admin panel. But I once I disabled NextGen Gallery, I was able to successfully update all my other plugins and still preserve my admin panel. Will report back after I’ve tried to update NextGen Gallery.
