• I updated WP to 3.4.2 (was 3.4.1) for site smlstrs.com a few days ago and thought all went well. All site contents are intact after the upgrade, except one little thing..

The admin pages and the login page ‘/wp-admin’ give 404 messages.

I am able to successfully login by using ‘/wp-login.php’, but all of the admin pages’ contents are the same 404 message. The toolbar shows up across the top and shows I’m logged in as admin. If I click any of the links or drop down links in the admin toolbar, the page content doesn’t change (404 page) but the URL DOES!! (I think that may hint at the problem?).

      ,

    • When I log in, i get 404 content for URL https://smlstrs.com/wp-admin/upgrade.php?_wp_http_referer=%2Fwp-admin%2F
    • When I am logged in and click ‘themes’ in the drop-down at the left end of the admin toolbar, the URL changes to https://smlstrs.com/wp-admin/upgrade.php?_wp_http_referer=%2Fwp-admin%2Fthemes.php

I’ve tried disabling themes by (temporarily) renaming the theme folder. (I’m using “tarski” theme.) -didn’t resolve, changed back.
I’ve tried disabling plugins by changing the ‘active_plugins’ field value to a:0:{} -didn’t resolve, changed back.
I am not sure if there’s a way to disable permalinks through the DB, but that was my next thought.

I’m happy to provide more info upon request, and I’m comfortable with mySQL/pHp basics.
Apologies if this is a duplicate issue/post, I couldn’t find this particular topic posted yet.

  • Try:
    – switching to the Twenty Eleven theme by renaming your current theme’s folder inside wp-content/themes and adding “-old” to the end of the folder name using FTP or whatever file management application your host provides.

resetting the plugins folder by FTP or phpMyAdmin.

    – re-uploading all files & folders – except the wp-content folder – from a fresh download of WordPress.

    – running the upgrade manually via wp-admin/upgrade.php

I have the exact same problem..

Did the reply esmi gave solve the problem?

-If you do that you lose your files

    Dont forget to keep backup

-You cant backup if you get this error. Because you cant open wp-admin.

I btw have the same error and dont have godaddy hosting. I use hostgator.

    @johnboimaze
i updated more than 20 WP site out of that 5 i faced the same issue which belongs to godaddy (so i thought it was godaddy issues)then i fixed by uploading whole set of WP files.

it was not a theme issue not a plugin issue. when i renamed .htaccess and tried to access wp-admin its shows 404

    regarding

-If you do that you lose your files

WordPress is design in such way its never conflicts with your website data. your website content is safe.

-You cant backup if you get this error. Because you cant open wp-admin

you can go through ftp and take backup of wp-content and backup of db through phpadmin.

do it now and your issue is fixed

Hey thanks for all your support ??

I did indeed backup what I could through ftp.

But I was not sure about one thing and could not find it on the internet either. And while reading your comment it still isnt completely clear to me.

    1. Is all the post data stored in wp-content?

    2. And are you saying that if i delete wordpress and upload the new 3.4.2 to the same database, all the post data is still there?

I think thats what you are saying. But just to make sure.

your wp-content have all your theme, plugin and all uploaded images. All other data is stored in database, i have not suggested to delete any file on server, i suggested to upload new files it will replace old file only.

i have not suggested to delete any file on server, i suggested to upload new files it will replace old file only.

    Yes I know I know.

Well many thanks for clearing things up

esmi, is your suggestion a whole procedure or a set of different, independent solutions to try out?

I’ve got the same problem with the wp-admin – can’t access any of the Dashboard or other pages. This is after upgrading to 3.4.2.
Tried to replace the files – didn’t work.
Tried to deactivate plugins – din’t work.
Tried to rename theme – didn’t work.

esmi, is your suggestion a whole procedure or a set of different, independent solutions to try out?

Please help me out. My site is https://www.advancedqtp.com

    Thanks!
