This started today and I have tried various things to fix it, all to no avail. I have not changed anything on my site in the past few days.

Briefly, if I log in to my WP admin in Chrome or Edge it either takes a long time to show a white screen (sometimes plain HTML with no styling) or I get the ERR_CONNECTION_RESET error.

I have tried clearing the cache, deleting cookies, even clearing out my entire web history in Chrome.

I have also tried turning off all plugins in WP to see if it was one of them – it isn’t. I also turned off all my Chrome extensions – it’s not that either.

The exact same thing is happening on both my WP sites that I have. This only affects admin – the site is shown perfectly to visitors and myself if I avoid logging in. If I try to login it hangs like I said above and then I can’t even access the site normally without clearing the cookies out again.

I have tried contacting my host who are pretty good with WP, but they see no errors in the logs for WP. I have scanned my PC for viruses or malware, and I have scanned my sites too. All fine there.

My best guess is that there was some change in Chrome (as Edge I believe is based on the same tech) as Firefox works fine. I am tending to think that it could be a cookie thing, but I am not sure.

    Anyone have any ideas please?

    Thank you.

WP wouldn’t normally process a FF request any differently than Edge or Chrome. It could be due to browser extensions you use. Try logging in via Chrome incognito mode, or whatever Edge’s equivalent is.

Admin users do invoke many more processes than regular visitors, so an additional lag is not too surprising, but there still should be no errors. It could be your server resources are overtaxed. If your cPanel tracks resource usage over time, see if any resources are maxed out when you encounter these problems.

It could be one of your plugins or even your theme is unusually resource dependent. Try switching to a default twenty* theme and deactivating all plugins. Does performance improve? Restore you normal theme and plugins, one at a time. When performance suddenly drops, the last activated is likely the culprit.

I am having ditto and exactly same issue. The dashboard runs butter smooth on Firefox however lags like ***** on Chrome. @rogstamp did you find any solution to the problem yet?

No I did not find a solution – I just switched to using Firefox and actually found that it is a better browser than Chrome! I use FF for everything now.

    Hey guys,

I used to have the same issue and in my case, it was the All-in-one Seo plugin that needed to be updated to its latest version. After that everything worked again on all browsers.

    I hope this helps.

    I never had that plugin.
