Admin menu reorder

I’m trying to reorder admin menu of my WP installation for clients. I’ve managed to remove some unecessary pages by hooking to admin_menu function inside functions.php file of my theme, but what I want now is to reorganize menu items that are left. I know I can do it with plugin like Admin menu editor, but I’m looking for a way to reorganize it using functions.php. Is there any easy way to do this? If not, is there some plugin which can edit which pages different roles see and in the same time reorganize menu?
