    Hi

Yesterday, I was locked out of my site when the permissions for the admin user were cleared (i.e. the role was set to null).

My hosting service has suggested that Wordfence might have done this, but I’ve never seen anything in the dashboard or options to indicate that WF would lockout a user by deleting its role.

Could you please confirm whether or not WF deletes user roles to prevent access?

    Thanks

    Hi @imincognito,

Wordfence does not control your user roles or manage which pages these roles have access to, so I would suspect that there may have been an issue elsewhere. If you run a user management plugin, perhaps a database query caused an error, leaving it in this ‘null’ state.

If you see any suspicious activity when you’re able to access your site again, such as malware in scan results, let us know!

    Peter.

    Peter,

Thx for the quick reply. This is what I expected. I don’t have a member plugin, so there’s an issue with the hosting service.

    Thanks

    Thanks @imincognito,

They may be able to check PHP or MySQL error logs from their end to see if the reason for the change can be explained. You may also be able to do this yourself if you see log files under Wordfence > Tools > Diagnostics > Log Files. A good idea would be to search for entries involving the table or specific field that was set to null.

If you have Wordfence questions in the future by all means open up a new topic and we’ll be glad to help any time!

    Peter.
