• Please bear with me as I try to explain this.

A week or two ago I bought my domain name, pentakisscomics.com, with WordPress. Now I’ve finally gotten around to downloading HostGator. Through cPanel I tried to install WordPress, which gave me the “Admin” username and the generated password. But when I try to log in with this password, it gives me this message:

Admin not a valid username on WordPress.com, please try again with the correct username.

Is it because I already have a WordPress account and password that exists with the domain? How can I get this to work? Any help would be super useful, thank you for taking the time to read.

  • Hi @avocadopolymath,

I usually don’t work with one-click instals but are you sure the username is “Admin” and not “admin” with a lower-case a? This would be the norm for WordPress, I suggest trying it.

Your WordPress installation username/password have absolutely nothing to do with your domain or hosting, so it is definitely not a conflict there.

    Also…

You do not log onto WordPress.COM. That’s a completely different system. Your sites login will be (something like):

    https://www.yourdomain.com/wp-admin/

If you’ve installed WordPress into a sub-folder (which some installers do by default) it would be:

    https://www.yourdomain.com/subfolder/wp-admin/

Thank you so much for your help! Daniel, I actually tried using lowercase “a” for admin several times and it did not work, but today when I tried, it magically worked. Thanks for giving me the magic touch! And catacaustic, I learned your advice the hard way lol. Thanks again for your quick and helpful replies.

    Hi @avocadopolymath,

I’m glad all is well now, good luck with your new site ??

Today I received the following error message “Admin not a valid username on WordPress.com, please try again with the correct username.” Is this a temporary error? It would not accept my email as a username alternative option as it suggested…yet I get emails from the WP regarding site updates etc. Is this a temporary problem? I’m locked out of the site.

Admin not a valid username on WordPress.com

Again… if it’s your own site you do not log into WordPress.COM

If you are still seeing a WordPress.com site you will need to change the nameserver records of your domain to point to your new hosting service.

Thank you, I just figured out the path and where I went wrong. Appreciate the help.
