• I did the automatic upgrade today to 2.8.5, got the “successful” link etc.,..

I closed my browser to do other things, and just came back to it and my admin is completely blank!

https://www.dime-co.com/wp-admin/ (I get a log in screen if I go to the login link directly, but once I log in – it’s blank too).

You can’t even see the site – https://www.dime-co.com/index2.php which was the hidden/default page.

    Nada.

    Help??

ADD ON (reviewed other people’s issues)

    – this is a linux server, not IIS
    – our php is set to 64M, so memory is NOT a problem
    – I even tested adding define(‘WP_MEMORY_LIMIT’, ’64M’); to the wp-config.php file and it didn’t do anything.
    – ALL plugins were disabled prior to the upgrade.

I’m totally stumped – and the site totally inaccessible to me. I can’t even access the admin to do *anything*.

    Help??

  • As long as you haven’t customized any files in the /wp-admin folder (and there’s no reason to think that you did), simply delete that folder from the server and reupload the entire /wp-admin folder from the distro. This way you are assured that you have fresh files and that the overwrite didn’t fail during a server burp. This cures it most of the time.

    Just tried that.

Didn’t do anything – still totally blank all pages. (Yet if you look at the php files IN my server via ftp, obviously it’s all there).

Could it be something like permissions that should be set, but didn’t set right?

    Plugins still disabled?

Yes, I can’t see anything to even turn them on if I wanted to LOL.

I took a quick peek at the index.php pages (inside the folders), which of course all say “silence is golden”.

Obviously placeholders, but it looks as if it can’t even find anything.

Should I wipe it out and restart? I had started customizing, but not a huge amount is done yet, nothing I couldn’t redo – but this is a royal pain, especially if there would have been a lot of content.

Okay. I wiped it all out (except the config file and database), reuploaded and went to the wp-login.php page. Logged in…
There I could see the admin – but the public pages were still blank.

So – we wiped it out 100%, including the database, reuploaded the script and the config file, and ran it – it worked including the public pages.

I uploaded the theme I had started to customize, activated it, and it still works fine.

So for some reason, it just did NOT like doing the upgrade – perhaps a glitch with the database because that’s the only thing we hadn’t wiped out.

Strange – but now it’s working.

The problem is, I have a dozen other blogs that are going to need upgrading… I can’t go doing complete reinstalls on every one, so we’ll try one more tomorrow. If it happens again – then there’s definitely a bug, and I’ll report back.

Delete both wp-admin and wp-includes and upload fresh copies from the core 2.8.5 files.

If still no joy, rename your plugins folder and your current theme – this will totaly nul the plugins on the install and force the default theme to be activated. You may also want to access your database via phpMyAdmin and check for recent active plugins, if there is any data there delete, save and re-try accessing your admin area.

I have the same issue!! I just upgraded and I can not get to my site at all!! I can’t afford to re do it all?!? the files are still where they should be etc, what should i do?

LEV … do as both I and ZGani suggested. When you upgrade, instead of letting your FTP program OVERWRITE existing files, just delete the /wp-admin and /wp-includes folder, delete all the wp*.php files (EXCEPT wp-config.php), and start from there. Also DO NOT delete any .htaccess or robots.txt files.

I have complete, failsafe upgrade instructions here as well:
    https://blog.pixelita.com/78/upgrading-your-legacy-wordpress-site/

Thanks for that! I did try that and it wouldn’t work…

I ended up speaking to my host, they told me to reinstall wordpress through Fantastico, and then i copied my backup files back on it, this worked although i did lose some I have to redo. Apparently this happened because you can’t upgrade higher than what your host is on….so now i know i will wait until they upgrade first!!

Thats one of fantastico’s problems. Sorry I didnt realise you had installed that way, the advise would have been slightly different and would have helped.

I don’t recommend using Fantastico for that reason. It’s just better to manage your own upgrades, and this goes for WordPress or just about any other script out there that is offered via the Fantastico installer. I like to set up my own databases and users and FTP the script to install and upgrade. And it’s the ONLY way to keep abreast of the latest security releases. Why web hosts haven’t figured THAT out is beyond me.

    This issue is still happening…

and I traced it to the theme.

I had magazine-basic as the theme. Once it worked with the full main new install, I added the magazine basic theme, and it stopped working.

As soon as I’ve deleted it, it works again.

Yes, I’ve now tested at least 5 other themes, and they all work fine.

Apparently this has happened to others, so there must be something in the theme causing it.

Now I have to redesign <sigh>

    Okay this is getting ridiculous.

If I leave the site for a few hours and come back – the admin is BLANK AGAIN!

I have the most SIMPLE template (theme) on it.

    Everything worked.

I was in teh admin, I was in the main site, I reloaded numerous times, I left.

I come back after 3 hours of being out, and the admin is blank again!

    WHAT is going on??

As you can see, I’m not the only person having this.

Frankly I’m about to roll back to 2.8.4. This has set me back 2 days now ??

    Any ideas?

    Amber
PS – you can SEE the really simple design at https://www.dime-co.com/index2.php/ which obviously has no “real” content on it… but when I log into the admin, it goes blank. And yes, I have it set to 64 meg, not 32.

Rename your plugins folder and leave it renamed for now. Also, switch your theme to the default theme. Even if you think it is a simple theme, it may be breaking things. See if there are any problems after you have those two things done. Keep your memory_limit raised to 64, too.
