Adjusting style of the “invalid” response-output message

I have been able to get almost everything in the contact form tweaked to match the styles of my page but am struggling with the style for the wpcf7-response-output message element. This is the message that appears below the form to confirm the message was sent or provide a reason it wasn’t.
I have been able to change the color of the text and just now managed to get the background-color but have so far been unable to change the border-color. When doing an element inspect, it appears that the cf7 styles are overriding the custom css that I add in my theme for the border color.
I am using the Themify Basic theme for reference.
Most of my stuff is trial and error so if it gets too deep, I may not be able to do it but am hoping there is a relatively simple way yo make these changes.
Any assistance is most appreciated.
