Adjusting Plugins and Updating

  • Often times I find a plugin that gets me 90% of where I want to be, but not all the way. When this happens I usually end up editing the plugin files. This is great because it gets me the effect I’m looking for, but it’s terrible because I can’t update the plugins without losing my changes.

    Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can make changes to plugins and still have the ability to update to new versions?

    bump.

    Depends on the plugins. Some of them may have filters or hooks that you can use.

    Otherwise, you can submit your changes back to the plugin dev and see if they will incorporate them.

    Finally, when all else fails, document your changes and reapply them after plugin updates. Or fork the plugin. ??

    p.s. – bumping your posts actually removes it from the “no replies” list that many mods use to look for posts that needs answers. ??

    Thanks @andrea_r. Much appreciated. Do you know any good resources that walk through how to fork a plugin?

    For bumping, I have definitely heard mixed things. I actually just started bumping because older posts never received responses. I just want to make sure I’m following the guidelines and not abusing the forums. I just know that when I go on to answer questions I usually look only at the most recent posts.
