In my Site Kit admin, I received the “Site Kit needs additional permissions to detect updates to tags on your site”. The explanatory text continues: “To continue using Analytics with Site Kit, you need to grant permission to check for any changes in your Google tag’s target Analytics property. The Google tag feature was recently updated to allow users to change a tag’s connected Analytics property without editing site code. Because of this change, Site Kit now must regularly check if the tag on your site matches the Analytics property destination.”

So I clicked the “Grant permission” button and went through the process. That took care of it–but only for the WordPress Admin user I was logged in as. Other users still are greeted with the dialog and seemingly have to go through the process.

What does this mean? So Site Kit’s ability to check if the tag is OK is tied to each WordPress Admin user, and therefore every Admin user has to go through the permission granting process? (And of course that process is a pain, because it requires entering Google credentials and then responding to 2FA, all tied to a single Google user who in a best case is only going to be one of the WordPress Admin users.)

Hi @fssbob thanks for getting in touch. Each admin user that has set up Site Kit on the site will need to go through this process.

As of version 1.99.0, when first visiting the Site Kit dashboard, users that have activated the Analytics module and do?not?have the Tag Manager module active will be prompted to grant a new scope. This is needed to continue using Analytics with Site Kit to check for any changes in your Google tag’s target Analytics property.

More information on the Google tag can be found at our page here.

After reading your response and the Google tag information page you referred me to, I could still use some additional clarification.

What happens if Site Kit determines the tag on the website no longer matches the Analytics property destination?

(I have a follow-up question, but it probably makes sense to wait until you answer this one.)

    Thanks.

@fssbob No problem at all. If Site Kit detects another tag placed on your site then it will notify you of this from the Analytics settings page found at Site Kit > Settings > Connected Services > Analytics. You can also change the connected property from the settings to your desired one.

It is recommended that you do not place multiple Analytics properties on your site. If the property has been removed or deleted then you may see a data error in the Site Kit Dashboard but as mentioned above you can then change the connected property at this stage to an existing one.

Does this help to answer your question? Happy to help with your follow up also.

Got it. So my follow-up question: Am I correct in assuming that Site Kit only performs this check for a currently logged-in WordPress Admin user who has previously responded to the “Site Kit needs additional permissions to detect updates to tags on your site” dialog. The check won’t be performed for other WordPress Admin users, as evidenced by the fact that they are still receiving the “Site Kit needs additional permissions” dialog.

    Thanks.

@fssbob That is correct. The other admin users will need to also first grant the permissions before they are able to access the Analytics settings screen.

Hope this helps to answer your question and please do let me know if there is anything else I can help with.

    OK, thanks for the explanations.

I provide web support for a number of organizations. Typically, on a site there will be several Admin users. What is the best practice for handling their access to Analytics and Search Console? Should each WordPress Admin user be assigned their own Analytics and Search Console users (tied to the same account)? (If yes, what level of access is necessary.) Will this mean they get assigned different website tags, resulting in multiple tags on the site?

Or should all the Admin users reference one Analytics and one Search Console user? If the latter, that would mean having to share those user’s credentials and 2FA–correct?

@fssbob This decision would be one for you to make as we can’t advise on this as it falls out of the scope of the support we can offer.

You can have multiple admins with access to the connected Google account on a single site. You can also use the dashboard sharing option to allow non-admin users to view particular stats in a view-only dashboard.

Thanks–I understand you can’t give advice. But as far as the informational part of my question goes: Given several WordPress Admin users, each specifying a different GA account when configuring Site Kit, what determines which GA tag will appear on the site at any point in time?

Hey, I’m facing similar issue. On Gsite dashboard it asks for more permissions. Like this…

But when I click on Grant permissions button, I get logged off from WordPress. How can I complete the process, if it keeps getting logged off. Please help.

@fssbob Apologies for the delay here. Each extra admin user that configures Site Kit after the initial setup by the first admin will need to sign in using a Google account that has access to the connected Site Kit Analytics property.

If an admin signs in with a Google account that does not have access to the connected Analytics property, they will see an Insufficient permissions in Analytics error in the Dashboard. More information on this can be found in our guide here.

Hope this helps to answer your question but let me know if there is anything else I can help you with.

Got it. My remaining question is: I understand how this impacts ACCESS to GA reporting. But what happens to the GA data COLLECTION tag on the site?

    1) I assume it remains regardless of whether an admin user with GA access is logged in. (Let me know if that’s incorrect.)

    2) What happens if an admin user logs in who doesn’t have access to the current GA account but does have access to a different GA account? Will they be able to tell the site is already connected to a GA account and thus don’t attempt to reconnect it to their account? And what happens to the tag if they attempt the latter?

    Thanks.

    @fssbob

    1. Yes, that is correct. This will remain unless a Site Kit reset is performed or the plugin is removed/deactivated.
    2. If an admin user logs in with a Google account that doesn’t have access to the connected property, they will see an Insufficient permissions in Analytics?error in the Dashboard. They can access the Analytics settings but won’t be able to change the property if they don’t have access to the current connected one. The property can be removed and a new one connected if a Site Kit reset is performed.

Note that when performing a Site Kit reset disconnects all users and removes all Site Kit settings, Dashboard Sharing settings and data within WordPress. After resetting, other administrators will need to go through the setup process again. Any users that have access to a view only dashboard will lose access to them.

Hope this helps. Let me know if you have any further questions.
