Additional CSS live-preview stopped working yesterday – though that CSS still works on the site. The preview frame now displays what the site looks like without any Additional CSS. Code changes are not reflected in the preview frame, but if saved they can seen via Visit Site.
I cloned the site and deleted all the Additional CSS from the clone, but the preview still doesn’t display the effect of valid rule sets when added.
Just before it stopped working, I’d enabled Advanced CSS controls. I suspect that the problem lies with that change – but now I can’t find a way to disable it.
Also, this is the root website site of a multisite. The secondary sites still have functional CSS live-previews. FWIW, they also don’t seem to offer an option to enable Advanced CSS controls, but naturally I’m fine with that.

Check your browser console for JavaScript errors. Unresolved errors will cause current Additional CSS to not display correctly.

What is Advanced CSS Controls? A plugin? If you have trouble with it, you should seek help through its dedicated support channel.

    Thank you, bcworkz.

“Advanced CSS controls” is not a plugin, but a part of the WordPress “CSS Editor” that is not necessarily exposed to the user.

The problem appeared after I enabled it, but I can’t find a means to disable it. Further evidence that “Advanced” is causing the problem is that checking the “Start Fresh” box briefly restores the live-preview

FWIW, the browser console does show a difference between the root site (left) and the still fully functional CSS Editor on the sub-sites (right). But the details might not matter if I can find a way to disable the “Advanced CSS controls”.

As you no doubt surmised, I’m unfamiliar with such a thing. The reference you linked is for WP .com, which does not necessarily translate to WP .org. If it’s a .com only feature, you may have access to it through JetPack. Try deactivating JetPack as a test to see if it goes away. If it does, ask how you should properly disable it through JetPack support.

BTW, the image you posted looks to me like browser console output and is entirely unrelated to WP.

Exactly where in WP did you enable this Advanced CSS controls anyway?

Bravo, bcworkz – good catch! “The Advanced CSS controls” options disappeared when JetPack was deactivated, and the CSS Editor live-preview now functions as it did before.

I recall that the enable checkbox was in Dashboard > Appearance > Additional CSS > Advanced CSS controls. Yes, this anomalous “Additional CSS” was a sister to Customize. It appeared only at the root site, and not in the sub-sites, and it disappeared after “Advanced…” was enabled.

I’m not convinced that we even need JetPack. It was added by the person who installed the multisite for us. I suspect the bug appeared via an auto-update.
