    Hello,

So, today I bought a second domain. I am going to install WordPress and I want to know how to add www. before the original URL. On my main site, 2 years ago, I remember changing only “WordPress Address (URL)” and “Site Address (URL)” from Settings > General, so, adding www before the main URL.

I thought I had to do the same thing but reading the forums it says that changing those two will break the site and Search Engines will find two variants of the site.

My question, I will install WordPress and then the first thing I will do is to add www from Settings > General. Then, do I have to do anything else? Will Google find two variants of the site or this is valid only for those sites that have a lot of content and have been running for a long time?

Hm, whatever you read is indeed wrong, because WordPress will redirect to what every you put in there, either www or not-www.

Just make sure you choose www when you setup the domain in your hosting provider’s control panel, and WordPress will do the rest.

A word of caution though, www is an old protocol from back when everything was under separate server hardware. www (www.example.com) was the web server, mail (mail.example.com) was the mail server, ftp (ftp.example.com) was the FTP server, print (print.example.com) was the print server, etc.

These days, everything is run under the web server, making www. redundant and a waste of four characters.
