We recently had our site hacked. It seems likely the problem arose from an out of date plugin. On advise from the site host, one of our site admins trashed the entire site and a fresh version of WP was installed. So we will be restoring the site from a previous backup. This will almost certainly include one or more plugins that will need updating.

Normally I would backup/restore by coping the public_html folder via ftp, and the SQL table via phpMyAdmin.
Plugins will need updating before the site can go live again, but if I restore in the usual way the out-of-date plugins will be live before I update them. So I guess I could rename the offline backup of the plugin folder before restoring public_html via ftp and then update the plugins from the WP dashboard.
I also intend to install Wordfence, but am unsure the best way to do this in the circumstance.

What is the best method/sequence for restoring the old backup, installing Wordfence and updating plugins?

  • Hey @eyeghoti,

Did they share and hints on which plugins it could be due to?

Your method seems fine as long you you quickly update the plugins. As far as installing Wordfence, you’ll install it like any other plugin once the site is restored. Then if you have any questions about configuration, please let us know.

Also, the guide below may help you clean the site with having to restore it. However, if the infection returns or you’re not comfortable with thisI’d suggest reaching out to a professional hack repair service to have the site cleaned and the point of entry patched.

You might also look into installing a backup plugin, they can make this process a lot easier.

    Thanks,
