Adding users to site, invalid character message

I am continuing to experience problems adding users to a site. Users such as “Firstname Lastname” get the error message. Then I change it to “firstnamelastname” and I get the same thing.

Previously, I was able to add “Firstname Lastname” with no problem.

Now, I can’t seem to anyone no matter how I set up the user name.
