Adding Social Icons to Navigation Menu

I would like to add social icons to my site’s navigation menu. On my other site, I create a custom menu with the following as the navigation label:

<i class=”fa fa-instagram-square”></i>

On my twenty-seventeen theme site, though, the icon is not visible, though the link is there.
