You can turn comments off for all posts and pages from this point on at Settings > Discussion, which you can override on a post by post and page by page basis, if you wish. For existing posts and pages (already published, you can use the WordPress Bulk Edit or Quick Edit feature to change them quickly.

Where are you wanting to add these sections? The normal main page of Intergalactic is designed to show posts, not page content.

You could create a static page and put both your about and contact sections into the content area of that page.

Another alternative would be to create a Custom Page Template.

I would suggest creating a child theme so that any customizations you make will not be overwritten by a future theme update.

I have added a plugin to create a child theme, seems to work well. One Q on that. Once I work on the child theme that, will that one remain live, and any updates to the theme will only be applied on the parent theme? Is the updating of the theme same process as normal?

Regarding the sections, I wanted to have everything on the one page. I guess this is not the theme to do that. I created separate pages (about / contact us). but would like guidance on how to remove the commenting sections on these pages:

Yes, the parent theme will be the only one updated, so any changes you make to the child will not be overwritten. The updating will be normal.

If you open your pages (about, contact) in the page editor, and go to screen options and activate Discussion, you can then turn commenting off for those pages in that discussion module (comment and trackbacks). That is easier than using targeted CSS to hide the comments on those pages, and it makes it easy to switch back if you wish to later on.
