Why don’t you want to use plugins? If you were to write this yourself, you’d still wind up writing a plugin. There’s nothing evil about plugins. That’s how you extend core functionality.

I do not learn anything from using a plugin. I was able to solve this by myself, but took ages as everything written to teach people is written for people who already know it. It’s also written in an over complicated way for absolutely no reason at all.

If you’ve written this in a better/cleaner/easier-to-understand way, please make it available! Maybe put it on Github?

I’ve done multiple “featured images” with ACF, but I just can’t remember the project I did it for.
